Why We Should Pay Attention to the Little Things

Summer is on its way out the door, school has started up again, and life is getting busier. Gone are those leisurely vacation days and it can feel like life is starting to fly right by. So how do you get time to slow down, or how do you enjoy these moments that are gone so quickly? Well, I believe a large part of it has to do with appreciating the smaller moments.

Too many times we seek out the momentous occasions, saying “I’ll be happy when this happens to me” or “life was so much better for me back then.” We can get caught in a dangerous cycle where we depend on the big life events to carry us through. That won’t always work. We may find that living life in this manner will only make regular days seem ordinary, when in fact they can be spectacular.

I’ve been trying to live my life in a way where I can appreciate something small, and recognize that while it may be small it is still incredibly mighty. Even the moments that seem most minor can have a major impact on your entire life, if you allow them to. All it takes is a shift of mindset, to remove the filtered glasses we all wear, and start celebrating everything that comes our way. For me, that means smiling at the people I pass as I walk to class, taking a few seconds to look around at the beautiful world I get to exist in, or simply having a good conversation. These are such simple daily tasks, yet the impact they’ve had on me has been tremendous. I no longer have to look to major events for purpose, I’m satisfied living life day by day.


How would your life change if you stopped to acknowledge these instances?


At BYUradio, we try to emphasize the special goodness that can be found everyday. No matter the scale, happiness and positivity should be shared. Our message is to “Talk About Good” and we do our best to add our own hopeful dialogue to the daily conversation. However you go about it, I hope you’re able to slow down and appreciate the small moments of joy in your life. You deserve it.

Taylor Swift's Power of Positive Thinking

Every year, I think Taylor Swift’s skills as an entertainer have always improved. I mean, I always thought she was great since the beginning. But even still, Taylor Swift did say, “This is a new year. A new beginning. And things will change.” I really like her power of positive thinking. And guess what? It totally worked for her! I feel like more people enjoy not only her music, but enjoy her just being her too!

I feel most people, including myself, recognize the flaws within ourselves much more than our talents. I need to do a better job at recognizing my talents more. But, is it bad to recognize our flaws? I don’t think so. If we are aware of our flaws we can improve them! We can make changes in our lives if we work hard and always think positively, just like Taylor Swift!

If you have ever listened to Taylor Swift’s music, you’ll know she has totally changed her genre of music (though she still sings about all her x-boyfriends).  With that being said, I am going to guess that when Taylor Swift actually said her quote mentioned above, she wasn’t referring to her music, but maybe some flaws she saw within herself.

So my question for all of us is: Why not start making changes in our lives right now?

We can start fresh with our new jobs, new classes, and new experiences this fall. But honestly, we really don’t need external factors to help us decide to change. We can make a difference in our lives and improve our flaws, no matter what day it is! It can be January 1st, the first day of fall semester, or just ANY day. Any day can be the start of a new year!

All of us can be better than we were the day before! I believe all of us can improve. We just need to believe we have the power to make our own lives better, no matter what day it is. We can do it!
